Women’s team defeated in close fought battle with South Downs Suns

Tuesday night (November 19) saw the Cougars women’s team suffer a disappointing eight-point loss against reigning league champions, the South Downs Suns.
The hard fought match was level at half time, but the Sun’s larger team size and aggressive fast breaks helped them snatch victory over the six-player home side.
The Cougar’s lineup featured team regulars Ella Sherman, Alice Johnson and Aude Eberlin, alongside 2013 newcomers Emelie Swerre and Ashley Sinclair, who suffered a frustrating sprained ankle in the opening minutes.
Hungarian point-guard Dora Keresztes impressed in her first Cougars match with aggressive driving towards the hoop, while promising junior Natalie Hilton posted her first points for the season.
An excellent Cougars zone defence kept the margin tight with the halftime scoreboard fixed at 18 - 17. But in the third quater the Suns launched a full court defensive press, creating some easy turnovers and fast breaks.
In the final quarter a Sun’s tech foul allowed forward Ella Sherman to sink three free throws, bringing the margin back to five. But the diminutive home side ran out of steam in the dying minutes and sadly couldn’t claw back victory.
The women’s team is still very keen to find new players. They’re a friendly, social bunch, so anyone with tall friends, relatives or co-workers – please do point them in the right direction.
