Worthing D&D took an early lead as new players recruited into the Under 12s had their first taste of competitive action.
The visitors exploited early defensive confusion in both the first and second 5-minute periods in the first half and threatened to surge ahead. But a quick timeout helped strengthen the team's attack and defense to focus on the gameplan.
In the third 10-miute period of the first half the Cougars dominated and started taking points and controlled the boards taking all rebounds. They soon drew level and took charge of the game.
Point guard Noah Tappenden, the Cougars' top scorer with 24 points, clocked up 12 points in this period with forward Tom Williams bagging 8. In the first 5 minute period of the second half Williams added a further 8 taing his game total to 16.
Sammi Charles-Ellery clocked up a total of 14 thoughout the game, sinking four baskets in the final 10 minute period of the game.
Worthing threatened a comeback in the final quarter but the Cougars slowed the game right down and walked off winners 63-39.
"I am proud of the boys as we had new players in the team following the loss of two key players to Worthing Thunder," said Coach Simon Ellery. "But the character and the 'never say die' spirit of this team clearly lives on."
"I'm looking forward to a strong season and I expect every single player to show huge improvements by working hard in training."
