New u14 girls team
Posted by Sean Jupp on 12 June 2014
An Under 14 Girls team has been entered officially into the Junior National League by the Brighton Cougars for the upcoming season. This is the first age group which allows a team comprising only of girls in Sussex to compete against other girls teams in the English club basketball landscape. Our club has started this team to provide a pathway to girls basketballers in Sussex, where the opportunity to play in a separate competition from boys is limited.
If you are currently in School Years 6, 7 and 8 and are interested in playing basketball please join us. Whilst some basketball experience would be beneficial, it is not essential, and new players with general sporting skills are very much encouraged to attend.
Train sessions will be held on;
Tuesdays 6.30pm-7.45pm (commencing Tuesday July 1st 2014)
Saturdays 12.00pm-1.15pm (commencing Saturday July 5th)
Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the starting time. Sessions during July and August cost £4 per player. From September season fees will apply. All sessions at Dorothy Stringer school, Loder Road, Brighton.
The Cougars U/14 Team will be one of the only (if not the only) all girls club basketball team operating in Sussex at the U/14 age group and below. The season runs from late September until April. Brighton Cougars has a continued commitment to the long term development of girls basketball within Sussex.
The team will be Coached by Hugh Sandie, a Level II Qualified Coach, with over thirty years of experience in basketball at the junior, senior and professional level. There will be additional coaching provided by the Cougars’ team of qualified junior coaches.
For specific information or to discus any aspect, please contact Hugh on hughrsandie@gmail.com or call on 07779 979823.

It would also be appreciated if you were able to promote the team within your school to any Sussex based girls who play basketball or have general sporting skills and may aspire to play basketball or a team sport.
Please feel free to contact Hugh or the club if you have any questions. We are hoping to have a great season and provide a pathway to Sussex girls in basketball, which is currently under represented at a club level and enhance sporting opportunities for girls by the team’s creation.
