As the Brighton Cougars U18 Men’s season got underway; it was obvious the guys were enjoying themselves. Training sessions were well-attended and energetic. Leaders began to show themselves. They were enthusiastic about playing man-to-man defence with a bit of anattitude. And on Saturday, all of thatcame together with an emphatic EBL South 1 Conference road win at Bracknell Cobras. The Cougars’ jumped out to an early 19-2 lead and continued that pace to 99-49 victory.
DominicEvans led all scorers with 33 points while Chris Currell and Anar Brewin added14 apiece.
“I was happy with our early effort, especially at the defensive end, and it’salways good to have everyone score in a game,” commented Coach MikeBlatchford. “We did get a little sloppy at times but it’s early in the season and we will keep getting better,” headded.
The Cougars started every period with a strong run, pushing out margins of12-2, 13-3 and 11-2 in the second, third and final periods, respectively. The Cougars led 52-13 at half time and shot 8of 13 from the free throw line.
“Our defence really set the tone from the start,” according to the coach, “Andas we were putting a stop to the Bracknell attack, we were able to get out and run to some easy scores.”
The Cougars will be facing much tougher opposition in future as Bracknell occupied the bottom of the table last season and will likely do so again thisyear. Regardless, starting the season with a win on the road is never easy and the Cougars have shown their conference opponents they are not to be taken lightly.
The Cougars host Guildford Heat on Saturday, 8 October at 2:15 at Dorothy Stringer.
The guys are looking forward to the support of their fellow Cougars in what promises to be a tough game.
