Under 16s team clash and under 14s battle it out

Twice in a week team-mates from Brighton Cougars basketball club have faced each other with two of the clubs under 16s teams meeting as well as two of its under 14s teams battling it out in the local Sussex Basketball League.
Brighton Cougars two U16s teams – Brighton Cougars A and Brighton Cougars – battled it out in the their first match of the season at the home court Dorothy Stringer secondary school on Monday (8 October).
Brighton Cougars A started strongly playing 'at home' against their training partners the Brighton Cougars going up 21 points to 16 in the first ten minute quarter of the game.
A high scoring second quarter saw both teams trade points with the home team scoring more three point shots and layups to take their total to 46 with the away team trailing at 38. Coach Marcus had Brighton Cougars A press the full length of the court.
Brighton Cougars responded with a counter press in the second half closely marking the home team as soon as the ball was passed inbound in an effort to force a turnover. Coach Simon's tactic quickly delivered results with the team clocking up layup after layup scoring 22 points against 16 in the quarter.
An exciting final quarter saw the defence of both teams come to the fore with the home team prevailing scoring 16 points against 13 which meant they won the game 78-73.
The Under 14s Brighton Cougars A – playing at home - and Brighton Cougars teams met on Wednesday (10 October).
Brighton Cougars A team are generally a year older and that showed in the final score but the younger team fought hard with the halftime score standing at 54 to 17. The home team then had their highest scoring quarter in the third period scoring 31 to 10 and despite orchestrating a fightback in the final quarter scoring 18 points the end result was 109 to 45.
Jon Lloyd, Brighton Cougars chairman, said:
“The under 16s match was a tough game that showed just how exciting basketball can be. At the start of the final quarter the score stood at 60 to 62 so parents and supporters saw a thrilling finish with three pointers and fast breaks throughout.
“It was a different story for the under 14s where one team was bigger and stronger than their younger counterparts but the Brighton Cougars still put up a strong fightback in the final quarter making it their biggest scoring period.
“The basketball season has started but its not too late for any junior players interested in playing the game in Brighton & Hove to give it a go.”
